Two years ago, a former Department of Homeland Security agency leader created controversy by establishing an organization to combat online disinformation. Now, she has formed a nonprofit organization aimed at fighting against conservative efforts to undermine researchers studying the sources of disinformation. The organization accuses three Republican committee chairmen of abusing their subpoena powers to silence think tanks and universities that expose disinformation sources. The group, called the American Sunlight Project, reflects the divisive nature of the disinformation issue as the 2024 presidential election approaches. It signifies the failure of informal networks at major universities and research organizations to effectively combat disinformation. Conservative efforts have successfully weakened disinformation monitoring regarding the American election system.
